C. J. Murphy is a mixed media artist from Fayetteville, North Carolina. His work centers on abstract interpretations of everyday life, as well as how Black bodies move and interact with the surreal. C.J.’s creations reveal an imaginative world that lives right in the corners of our vision. His work has been shown across the state in venues such as Artspace, the 311 Gallery, and VAE Raleigh.
Mixing the mundane with the magical unreal is at the heart of every one of my works. Organic, floating forms permeate many of my creations, providing a sense of whimsical serenity. I enjoy using collage as a medium due to its synergistic nature; remixing the best elements from a variety of sources to forge something greater than the sum of its parts. My work is a glimpse into how I view the world, looking through it as if through shattered stained glass. It’s a kaleidoscope of color and form, with content Blackness at the center of it all. The tale I focus on telling is clear: we are not just our struggles and pain, but our weird and wonderful perspectives too.
