I studied painting and drawing at the New York Studio School in NYC. I also have a degree in horticulture and worked for many years at the New York Botanical Garden as a gardener in charge of the Irwin Perennial Garden.
I have painted flowers most of my life. I am interested in how different cultures revere flowers and include floral motifs in so many aspects of design in daily life. Textiles, pottery, and architectural elements, all contribute to my interest and understanding of floral art. The pieces I've chosen for this show have their influence in the Norwegian folk art painting called "Rosmal" where images of flowers were freely painted on furniture, and on walls, doors, and sometimes floors. The flowers are based on real flowers but have been abstracted to suggest rather than illustrate the floral motifs.
