James A Hamilton III
Artist Bio
Jim Hamilton was born in 1931 in Buffalo, New York. and was interested in art from an early age. He took art courses in high school and the Art Institute of Buffalo (one semester) to study drawing before enlisting in the United States Army. He served with the 31st RCT in Korea.
He attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1952 to 1955 and 1959 to 1960 and was awarded the Louis S. Ware Memorial Scholarship in 1955. He continued to paint and make prints throughout the 1970s and '80s while working in the advertising and commercial art fields. His work was exhibited locally in Philadelphia, including juried shows at the Pennsylvania Academy and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. From 1972 through 1974 he attended the Philadelphia University of the Arts and Temple University and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. In 1978 he received a Juris Doctor from Temple University.
He resumed painting and exhibiting in 2001. He regularly shows at the Artists Association of Nantucket, at Robert Foster Fine Art (Nantucket), and juried shows throughout the country. He has been accepted in over 100 juried shows.
His work has been awarded several prizes including those from the Fellowship of the PA. Academy of Fine Art, Woodmere Art Museum, Phillips Mill Annual, etc. His work is in U.S. university museums and several private collections.
