Faith Gabel-Simmons

Artist Bio

Faith is from Brooklyn, New York, and has been involved in many different types of art her whole life. She's taught modern dance, worked with ceramics, and produced poetry which has been published in both the US and Canada. She also spent a number of years living outside of the United States where she worked in a mosaic factory, making mosaic dining room walls and plaques for the tourists. When she returned to the US, Faith went back to school and received her Bachelor's Degree in creative writing. Upon returning to New York a number of years later, she began working for a New York City governmental agency as a writer and editor.

At that time, a graphics design friend of hers recommended she look into Photoshop as it would make some of the work projects she was producing easier to complete. Faith found the program astounding and asked her boss to purchase it for work. Photoshop opened up a whole new world to her. As Faith's boss knew she also had a digital camera, he then asked her to produce photos of famous places in the city for their conference room using Photoshop. Faith took the photos, downloaded and digitally manipulated them in the program, and printed, framed, and hung them up. Faith always knew she had a flare for color but this confirmed it, as many people complimented her on the work. She was so taken by the artistic nature of the program that she proceeded to take Photoshop classes where she met other artists using the program for different types of artwork. By now, Faith was totally in love with visual art and decided it was time, like these other artists, to explore other types like painting and mixed media.

Faith wasn't sure how to start so she began by talking to an artist friend of hers about painting; what materials to use and how to use them. Her friend recommended she use acrylics as they are less toxic and quicker drying than oil. After a few years of experimenting with acrylics along with magic markers in her abstract paintings, Faith began answering submission calls and joined the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists' Coalition as a member and later as a Board member of BWAC. Since then, Faith's work has been in many solo, juried, and group in-person and digital art shows and fairs all over the world, as well as in a few films and a number of publications. She's received a number of awards and honorable mentions for her work and has sold a number of pieces over the years
