Cathryn Baerwald

Artist Bio

Cathryn Baerwald lives in her tiny farmhouse in the Snoqualmie Valley near Seattle, Washington only a stone’s throw away from where she was raised. She has remained in rural areas for most of her life because of her deep desire to connect with the natural world. Creativity has always been a part of her expression from making picture books as a child, to photography, and later landscape design. Art provides her the opportunity to express deep emotions and communicate with other people in a way that she might otherwise find difficult.

Eventually, Cathryn went on to university in Seattle for a Master’s Degree in Education. While teaching grade school, Cathryn was able to continue her creative endeavors through teaching art classes to enthusiastic children. Then after 10 years of teaching, she returned to her roots in nature and founded an organic vegetable farm which was successful for almost 20 years.

As Cathryn began to step out of full-time farming, she dove into the art world taking as many art classes as she could and setting aside time to explore nature for inspiration. Among the art schools she studied at were Pratt Fine Arts, Kirkland Fine Arts, and Cloud 9 Art School with several established and successful artists including Fatima Franks, Larry Calkins, and John Avendano. Mixed media became her passion because of how dynamic and textured it can be and was encouraged to show her work. Within one year of her first class, Cathryn’s work was accepted into an exhibition. For the most part, Cathryn develops her imagery from a longing to share how she sees the world outside herself. Her dramatic and expressive style brings forth a story of a day or a moment in life that can be felt.
