The Scan Series helped me explore the Chineseness of my identity as an overseas Chinese, born and reared in Singapore, where the source of my understanding of Chinese culture was my formative education, partially delivered in English. The stories and legends passed down from elder relatives and hearsay from a wider family circle intimately tied me to childhood memories of home. Certain subject matter continually resurfaced, for example, children dressed in traditional costumes assuming three positions: sitting, hauling, and dancing.
